What are Millets ?

Millets are amazing small grains that are packed with tons of minerals & proteins that keep our body full & energized. They are good source of fiber, iron & calcium along with complex carbohydrates. They are much cheaper than fancy grains like quinoa.

Roasted Millets are a perfect anytime snacks:-

Roasted millet mix is the perfect anytime snack. Kids can have after school, at work it can bring, or even one can have in the breakfast too. It’s also a easy way to introduce healthy grains to your family. They will love it & they won’s even know to notice they are eating super healthy food.

  • They are easy to make,it can be prepared in 30 minutes.
  • It can be customized with varieties of nuts, dried fruits, jaggery & spices.
  • Millets are very affordable for any person than other expensive grains.
  • You can make savory & sweet both the options with millets. Both the combination with crunch gives you an addiction to have this as your favorite snack.

There are many ways to make roasted millet mix but lets try the basic recipe given below:-

Ingredients:-

  • 1 cup of mixed millets (Foxtail Millets,Finger Millets,Pearl Millets or any other)
  • 1/4 cup of seeds like sunflower,flax seeds,pumpkin seeds or any.
  • 1/4 cup of nuts(any of your choice,this is totally optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of refined oil or to enhance taste ghee or butter can be used for all roasted snacks.
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilly powder or black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt as per the taste

Method:-

  1. Rinse the millets properly with running water.
  2. Heat the pan or kadai on the gas over a medium heat.
  3. Place all the millets in the pan stir it continuously on the low medium flame till it turn golden brown & start releasing aroma.
  4. In an another pan heat a spoon of oil or ghee,add all the seeds & nuts mix them till it turn crispy now add all the spices & salt as per the taste & turn off the gas.
  5. Pour this mix into the millet & toast them completely so the spices can incorporate to the whole millets properly.
  6. Give a final mix to all the stuff on low flame for about 1 minute.
  7. Turn off the gas & let this roasted millet mix get cool down completely.
  8. Store it in air tight container at a room temperature for about 2 weeks.

Tips:-

  • Feel free to adjust the spices according to your taste. Smoked paprika, garlic powder, or curry powder can add interesting twists.
  • You can also roast this mix in the microwave by preheat on 35 degree F. In a bow mix the spices & seeds in a hot oil pour this mix in the rinse millets & spread altogether in a baking tray. Let them bake for 20-25 minutes in a preheat oven.
  • Be sure to watch the millet mixture closely while it is baking, as it can burn easily.
  • You can also add fried curry leaves & coriander leaves for garnishing the top.
